How to never have a headache again - Ever!
By John DeVries | February 13, 2008
I haven’t had a headache last for more than 30 seconds in over 8 years. However, that isn’t because I never get them, it’s due to the fact that at their very onset I can remove them almost instantaneously.
The following advice may seem odd or out of the norm to you, but it does work. Try it a few times, it might work for you too. I’m not going to give you a bunch of holistic bibble-babble. This is honestly what I do every time I feel a headache coming on.
-Disclaimer-
Headaches can be indicators of severe physical ailments including: brain tumors, aneurysms, diminishing eye site, stroke, Meningitis, subdural hematomas, Parkinson’s disease and carbon monoxide poisoning - just to name a few.
If you have frequent, extremely painful or chronic headaches please seek the advice of a certified physician. I am not one of those and this is not medical advice.
This technique is for mild stress and tension induced headaches. If you have these commonly, this article can help you.
Your mind is powerful
One night, when I was about 16 years old, I was lying in my bed trying to fall asleep with a splitting headache. As I unsuccessfully attempted to drift off, my thoughts landed on the possibility that perhaps I didn’t have to continue experiencing this pain.
I knew our minds had immense power over our bodies.
Though my brain regulates my digestion, breathing and body temperature without my conscious input, I am also able to practice some level of control over these processes if I so choose. I can change my breathing patterns, choose not to use the restroom, and some monks have proven the ability to raise their core body temperature through meditation.
In 1963, Thích Quang Duc (a Buddhist monk from Vietnam) burnt himself alive in protest of the South Vietnamese administration’s persecution of Buddhists in the region. Not only was this act significant and courageous in itself, he performed it sitting quietly and peacefully while flames engulfed his body. By mediating and calming his mind, he was somehow able to reduce the pain enough not to flinch or make a sound. I don’t bring up this story to make an object of him or his sacrifice. I pull this example to make a point only: Your mind is extremely powerful.
How to never have a headache again
I figured if other people could use their minds to manipulate their bodies in such extreme ways, I aught to be able to get rid of a simple headache.
I was right
Step 1 - Believe
First, you need to believe in the process. I’m not sure why exactly, but I’ve found that if I believe this can actually work (not hard after it does), that makes the process much easier. I think I’ve presented enough evidence to you to suggest this is possible. Do your best to suspend disbelief and you will probably be pleasantly surprised with the results.
Step 2 - Relax
When you first try this out it might take you a few minutes. I’ve gotten to the point now where it doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing, I can be rid of a headache in seconds. But for your first try, go and find someplace quiet. Lie down if it is at all possible.
Close your eyes and very slowly count to 22. Breath deeply and slowly, keep your eyes closed and do your best to empty your mind of any thoughts.
Step 3 - Localize the pain
Picture your physical brain in your mind. See it in your thoughts as vividly as you can and try and observe what the pain looks like and what’s causing it. I usually picture the nerves that are inflamed and reacting to the swelling of a blood vessel. I’m not sure physiologically how accurate that is, but it works for me. Its a way for me to logically wrap my conscious thoughts around what is happening physically in my head.
Now focus on the spot that hurts and really get a feel for exactly where it’s at.
Step 4 - Send a message to your nerves
Now picture your brain sending a message to your nerves telling them they don’t have to be irritated anymore. I know, I know… this is weird. But it’s worth getting rid of you headache, right?
Don’t picture a brain, a body, or a headache. Picture yours, the one in your head.
Your brain us ultimately in charge of your body. It sends and receives messages from all your nerve endings. Now you’re going to use it to do the sending and receiving consciously.
Sometimes I picture a blood vessel in my brain shrinking. I do this by picturing it returning to its normal size and relieving pressure on my brain. Somehow, my mind sends the message through my neurological system and the pain stops. I can’t explain why, it just works. And that’s how I do it.
Step 5 - Will it away
Now keep this imagery up. Will your headache symptoms away by consciously eliminating the cause. Try and send the message from your brain just like you would send a message to move your hand or swallow. It takes some practice, so be patient. You should, however, be able to do this successfully in a few minutes. I find the more intense the headache, the more challenging the removal.
Notes:
Sometimes it will begin to work and then the headache will start to come back. Keep going, you’re doing something right. Occasionally I’ll find that I eliminate my headache completely only to have it return a few minutes later. I just go back and start the process over again, I usually don’t have to do it more than once or twice.
Be patient with yourself. If this is a new idea for you it will probably take some practice. I’m not sure everyone will be able to do this successfully, but if I can do it consistently I’m sure pretty much anyone is at least capable of it.
